Houston's Regional Forest - Field Measurements

The Economic and Environmental Benefits of Urban Trees
Field Measurements
An objective view the eight-county Houston region necessitates the use of aerial photography, satellite imager and other remote sensing data. But they can only see the surface of the region's tree canopy. Field measurements provide details that satellites miss - for example, the size and species of individual trees or the location of trees with respect to buildings. This detailed information is essential for the UFORE modeling analysis.

In 2001 and 2002, field crews visited more than 300 one-sixth acre plot samples located across the region, representing urban areas, forested areas, and agriculture/rangelands. Detail measurements were taken of over 30 variables on the sites, land cover, and vegetation.
